XP, or experience points, represent a measure of the overall skill level of a hero and determine his or her level.

Heroes gain XP by participating in combat or through training in keeps, with the levels of their trainers, including the regent and partner of the keep and all of the nation's Standards, determine how much XP trainees gain.

The amount of XP required for each level is determined by the game's difficulty, and is as follows:
